Cravings are most often a signal that something is out of balance. Physically, they can be a sign of nutritional deficiencies. Mentally, they can indicate a lack of appropriate stimulation, or too much mental stimulation. Emotionally, they can signify repressed emotions or an emotional hunger that stems from a lack of pleasure, joy or love in our lives.
To deal with your cravings, first take a moment to recognize their presence and via mindfulness examine their potential root cause. Are you eating a healthy diet comprised of nutrient-dense foods and regular meals? Are you making time for proper self-care, stress management and dealing with your emotions? If not, make a priority to address these root causes.
Secondly, seek to understand the cues that may be triggering your cravings. Is it while you are working under pressure? Is it after an unpleasant social interaction? Is it when you are watching television? By knowing your triggers, you can transform them or prepare for them in effective ways.
Finally, have on hand healthy snacks that can replace unhealthy ones when cravings hit. For example, replace processed or microwavable popcorn with air-popped popcorn. Replace dairy ice-cream or milkshakes with homemade fruit and/or nut versions. Replace sugary snacks with fresh or dried fruits. Replace processed chocolate snacks with raw cacao homemade treats.
