A healthy diet made up of real and whole nutrient-dense foods is one of the best support systems for your wellbeing and defenses against the effects of stress to help your body heal and prevent disease.

Unfortunately the more stressed you are, the more you may find yourself drawn to unhealthy foods, ones that are refined and high in calories, sugar, salt and fat. Such foods compound the effects of physical, mental and emotional stress.

Stress eating, also referred to as emotional eating, takes place anytime we turn to food for some sense of comfort. Stress is very depleting to the body and mind, and we look to our food to fill that void in an attempt to relieve our stress, and introduce more pleasure and satisfaction into our lives. This is expressed through unhealthy food choices, cravings and overeating, which fail to offer an effective solution and only bring more health, weight and energy problems.

To break this destructive cycle, be sure to engage in the following:

  1. Effective stress management, by identifying what causes you stress and minimizing their presence in your life and impact on you.
  2. Stress reducing exercises.
  3. Mindful eating.
